Centre 33: Sharing the team’s words of wisdom for young people and their parents
Centre 33 has supported more than 50,000 young people in Cambridgeshire in the last 40 years. We asked the team to share their words of wisdom for young people.
Anita, young people’s counsellor
When we worry about something, we often imagine the worst, even though the worry may never come true. Try asking yourself what the likely outcome is if your worry does not happen. And even if it did happen, how would you handle it? Would you eventually be OK? Write down your answers if it helps. Focusing on what will probably happen, instead of what we fear will, can change how we feel about our worries.

The first few weeks back at school can be overwhelming and it’s normal to feel nervous. Making sure you’re prepared – packing your bag, setting your alarm and knowing which lessons you have each day – can help. You can also write down the things you are looking forward to this term and the things you are nervous about – talk to someone you trust to help you work through the worries.
Nicole, ‘Someone to Talk to’ team lead
It's not always easy, but starting my day with movement helps reduce feelings of overwhelm or anxiety. I use outside space to move in whatever way works for me. Sometimes I have lots of energy and want to go on a run and other days I take a short walk. I find that starting my day with movement helps me focus and feel ready to tackle the day – it's something I'd encourage anyone to explore in their own way.

Feelings can be complex and when you’re having a difficult time, it’s often not just down to one thing. Looking after yourself and finding coping strategies that work for you can be very helpful, but please don’t struggle alone. We’re here. Support at Centre 33 is free and you don’t need a referral. We’ll give you space to talk about everything that’s on your mind and find ways to help you work through it.
Adam, Young Carers project worker
Listening to music (live and loud or quiet and chill when life is already noisy) can be great for wellbeing. Many young people enjoy listening to their playlists – it’s not always about a favourite genre or band, but it can help them get through their day. And remember, nothing lasts forever, and good times follow hard times. It’s not forever and things will get better. Stay strong and keep challenging yourself – you can do it.
Frances, director of finance and HR
There is no such thing as normal – you should follow your dreams and do something that excites you and interests you. Life is too short, make every second count, embrace and enjoy. There is so much pressure on young people, it’s easy to forget it is your life, your journey. Live it to the full, make memories and be kind to yourself and others.
Kiran, ‘Someone to Talk to’ administrator
One of the main things I do to look after my wellbeing is fill my time with things that feel right for me, whether that’s socialising, reflective time in nature, a cosy, quiet day in my house, or a busy day of tasks and organising. It’s OK to prioritise your needs and focus on things that help you feel safe and calm, whatever that looks like for you.
Molly, operations administrator
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be to never add unnecessary pressure to yourself when you’re already feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. One foot in front of the other and take one day at a time.
Becca, Young Carers senior project worker
One of the main things I do to look after my wellbeing is spend quality time with my dogs. Spending time with pets and getting outside can be a brilliant way to feel more positive if you're having a difficult time.
