Charges due to rise for additional green bin collections in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire
The charge for additional green bin garden waste collections looks set to increase in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire.
Households currently receive one free green bin collection as part of the Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service, but there is a charge for more.
The councils are proposing to increase the charge from its current level of £35 a year for an additional collection service, which was introduced in 2018, by adding an extra £5 a year over three years until it reaches £50.
A Cambridge City Council budget proposal for the next financial year, 2021-22, said the change would bring the cost “in line with charges made by other local councils in the region of £50 per bin”.
The lead cabinet member for environmental services at South Cambridgeshire District Council, Liberal Democrat councillor Brian Milnes, said the decision followed a review of the pricing and will help pay for the discretionary service.
The cost increase is only a proposal at this stage, and the councils will need to approve the change prior to it taking effect.
Householders can pay for the collection of up to three additional green bins, with a separate fee for each.
Green bins, which are used for garden waste and food waste, are collected fortnightly from March to November, and monthly from December to February.
