Christmas behind bars for thief spotted acting suspiciously in the early hours by officers on patrol in Cambridge

Neighbourhood officers on patrol in Cambridge in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 12) caught a thief in the act - and he will be spending Christmas behind bars.

Jerome Wallace was spotted acting suspiciously by the officers, who followed him into Peter Cowell Close, where they found him sat in a vehicle. He raised their suspicions further when he ran off.

Wallace, 33, of Gervase Street, London, was arrested because he could not account for why he was in the vehicle and was found in possession of a screwdriver.

Police connected him to other crimes with CCTV evidence.

On December 1, he smashed his way through the window of a Seat Ibiza parked in Chieftain Way to steal a bag and went on to use bank cards from the vehicle to purchase cigarettes and scratch cards just hours later.

On December 8, he broke into an Audi in Sherlock Close and stole some loose change.

At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday (December 13), Wallace was sentenced to 22 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of theft from a motor vehicle, going equipped for theft and fraud by false representation.

PC Hannah Watkins said: “Thanks to the reactions of the neighbourhood officers, Wallace is behind bars for Christmas.

“While his actions can and will not be condoned, the case does highlight the importance of not leaving valuable items inside vehicles. People like Wallace are opportunists who will strike at any given opportunity.”
