City MP to join street cleaners on Mill Road
Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner and Cllr Anna Smith will join the unsung heroes of Cambridge – the city’s council street cleansing crew.
They will join the team early tomorrow morning, dressed from head to toe in high viz protective gear,
The street cleaning team are responsible for cleaning the city’s streets and open spaces, emptying bins, clearing up fly tipping and litter picking.
The duo will talk to staff about their street cleansing work, including operational challenges and ideas on how the service could be improved.
Mr Zeichner said: “It’s a tough job, walking miles each day in all weathers. It’s also certainly not what most people think about when you talk about jobs in Cambridge. But day in day out they make sure all Cambridge is spruced up for the benefit and enjoyment of everyone living here and people visiting.”
Cllr Smith said: “As the new executive councillor for Streets and Open Spaces, I think it’s vital to experience our teams’ work for myself. I’m therefore delighted to be spending a full shift working with our fantastic men and women who do so much behind the scenes to keep our city functioning effectively.”
This will be Mr Zeichner’s third stint with Cambridge’s street cleaners and he will get to experience first-hand some of the many issues that workers experience while out on their shifts including seeing how very different Cambridge looks at 6am in the morning.
