Coach driver given suspended sentence after Swaffham Bulbeck crash that caused serious injury

A coach driver has been given a suspended sentence after causing a crash that left a woman with serious injuries.

Alison Godfrey, 48, was driving a coach along Swaffham Heath Road, near Swaffham Bulbeck, when it struck a silver Ford Fiesta at about 5.30pm on Tuesday, 14 November, last year.

Godfrey failed to give way at the junction with the A1303 Newmarket Road and collided with the Fiesta, which was travelling east towards Newmarket.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Godfrey told police in interview that she had not seen the junction and could not stop in time.

Godfrey, of Northfield Park, Soham, was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison, suspended for one year, by Cambridge magistrates last Thursday (22 August).

She had pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving at an earlier hearing.

She was also banned from driving for one year and ordered to pay a total of £239 in costs.

Det Con Alex Bond said: “This case serves as a wake-up call to all drivers to pay attention when they are driving. One lapse of concentration can have very serious consequences.”
