Community grants of up to £5,000 available in Cambridge

Grants of up to £5,000 are available for community groups to help fund projects in Cambridge.

The city council’s area committee grants application round is open to non-profit, voluntary and community organisations, or groups of local residents.

They could meet the costs of various aspects of a project, such as

  • venue hire for community, arts or sports activities;
  • transport for trips by disabled, younger or older residents; or
  • materials for art projects.

Area committees will recommend grants for projects taking place in the city between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023 that will help to reduce social and/or economic inequality for residents.

Groups can apply to more than one committee if activities are taking part in different area.

Deadlines to apply are:

  • North area (Arbury, East Chesterton, West Chesterton and King’s Hedges wards) - January 25
  • South area (Cherry Hinton, Queen Edith’s and Trumpington) - January 28
  • West/central area (Castle, Market and Newnham) - February 1
  • East area (Abbey, Coleridge, Petersfield and Romsey) - February 8

Decisions will be made in March.

Local groups can also apply for separate grants of up to £500 to help with events taking place between May 1 and June 30, 2022, to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The process and deadlines will be the same.

Cllr Anna Smith, the council leader and executive councillor for communities, said: “These grants make such a difference to our local communities and I hope as many community groups as possible will submit a bid.

“One of the council’s absolute top priorities is to tackle the poverty and lack of opportunity faced by so many people in Cambridge, through our anti-poverty strategy.

“These area committee grants can contribute towards the amazing work being done by so many groups in our city to help and support residents who may otherwise miss out on opportunities and to make Cambridge a more equal place.

“I’d also encourage community groups, local organisations and residents’ groups making plans to celebrate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign this year to apply for one of the special Jubilee Grants to help with their events.”
