General Election 2019: South East Cambridgeshire result - Conservative Lucy Frazer wins third election

In South East Cambridgeshire, Conservative MP Lucy Frazer celebrated her third general election victory in a constituency that has never been anything other than Tory since it was introduced in 1983.

Ms Frazer, 47, polled 32,187 votes - down by 1,414 votes from the 2017 General Election - but more than enough to guarantee a third election success.

Liberal Democrat Pippa Heylings finished second with 20,697 votes while Labour’s James Bull came in third on a catastrophic election night for Jeremy Corbyn’s party.

He polled 10,492 votes while Independent candidate Edmund Fordham came fourth with 1,009.

Ms Frazer said: “We all care about our future so much and hopefully now we can break the deadlock in Parliament and move on. I am honoured to continue in a role that I love.

“I have always campaigned for fairer funding in schools and I feel I have had some success with that but I reckon there is more to come. I will work really hard to make sure that we can level up funding locally too.”

Labour suffered a dreadful night and the party faced a future with difficult decisions to make, including how to replace their leader.

Mr Bull said: “It is not really expected that you stay in that role after two defeats. Now I hope we take more time to reflect as a party as there is always temptation in politics to have a knee-jerk reaction after a big loss.”

The turnout for Cambridgeshire South East was 74.5 per cent, up slightly from 73.2 per cent two years ago.
