Consultation to launch on Milton Road improvement plans

A public consultation on proposals to provide improved public transport, cycling and walking journeys along Milton Road begins next week.

The £16m project includes the introduction of inbound and outbound bus lanes and proposals for ‘floating bus stops’ with segregated walking and cycling lanes.

The scheme is funded by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) and aims to help reduce congestion and encourage more people onto sustainable modes of transport.

It also includes ‘Copenhagen-style’ crossings to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and residents in the area.

Trees that are removed to make way for the new bus lanes and shared-use cycling and walking routes will be replaced with semi-mature trees which are more suitable to the environment.

Cllr Lewis Herbert, chair of the GCP’s executive board, said: “We have worked closely with the community over the past two years to design a scheme that makes way for safer walking and cycling routes, and improved public transport but also maintains Milton Road as a tree-lined avenue into the city centre.

“As a result of our discussions with the community, any trees that are removed will be replaced along with additional landscaping to further enhance the area.

“I want to thank all the residents, councillors and others who have contributed towards the updated design and strong set of proposals for improving cycling and bus journeys along Milton Road in the future.”

Construction is expected to begin in 2020.

People can share their opinions on the plans at one of three community events or using the GCP’s new online engagement tool, Consult Cambs, which includes an interactive map and a questionnaire.

The findings will be put before members of the Joint Assembly and Executive Board later this year for a decision.
