Cllr McQueen resigned with immediate effect from her role representing the East Chesterton ward on Cambridge City Council yesterday (Tuesday, December 6). She was first elected to the council in 2018.

Council leader Cllr Anna Smith said: “Cllr Carla McQueen has made a huge and lasting impact during her time as a councillor.

“In particular, in relation to her work to ensure that some of our most disenfranchised communities in the city have a voice.

“Carla has also been a hugely popular member of the Labour group and has been a strong source of support to Labour colleagues during her time as chief whip. I want to wish her all the best in the future from all her colleagues. We will all miss her greatly.”

East Chesterton is still represented by Cllr Gerri Bird and Cllr Baiju Thittala Varkey.

Cllr Bird said Cllr McQueen had been a “dream” to work with and would be missed.

Because Cllr McQueen’s resignation comes within six months of the end of her term of office, a by-election will not take place. The seat will remain vacant until the local elections on May 4, 2023
