Royal Papworth workers in 1,200-mile cancer charity challenge from Geneva to Malta

Two friends who work at Royal Papworth Hospital are to undertake an arduous 1,200-mile bike ride to raise money for local hospices after one of their families was devastated by a double loss.

Luke Capon 35, and friend Ben McCleary, 23, will cycle unsupported, carrying all their luggage, and individually funded, from Geneva to Malta to help fundraise for three hospices.

Last year, Luke and his brother cycled from London to Geneva in memory of their older brother who died aged 36 after battling cancer, raising £11,500 for Cancer Research UK.

Mr Capon added: “Eighteen months on and we are now grieving the loss of our mum to the same disease. Throughout their illnesses they were provided with excellent, compassionate care from local hospices. The pain on the bikes is temporary, unfortunately people living with cancer do not get any respite and this will motivate us when we are struggling.

“My brother and I are in the process of setting up a charity to help patients and families living with cancer in the region.”

The pair will be on the road from September 11 to 26.
