Cycling to get £4.6millon of 'quick win' improvements
The Cambridge Greenways network is getting investment to improve cycling between the city and nearby villages.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership is proposing a £4.6million package of ‘quick wins’ for short-term improvements across the Greenways cycling and pedestrian network.
Greenways are a proposed set of 12 cycling, walking and equestrian routes linking nearby towns and villages to Cambridge.
The ‘quick wins’ include the widening and resurfacing of a number of existing cycleways across Greater Cambridge, including between Stapleford and Sawston.
A new shared use path linking Cottenham to the Guided Busway, which would help to support the creation of a Rural Travel Hub in Oakington in the future, is also being proposed in the improvement programme.
Cllr Lewis Herbert, interim chair of the GCP Executive Board, said: “The Greater Cambridge Greenways is a fantastic project that has been widely supported by residents and commuters, and would help to bring elements of our wonderful countryside in to the city.
“I would urge people who live or travel along the proposed Barton to Cambridge and Haslingfield to Cambridge Greenways to come along to one of our engagement events and to take part in the public consultation to help decide the final routes.
“I am also pleased that we are able to bring forward this proposed programme of ‘quick wins’ that would enable us to enhance the cycling and walking experience in Greater Cambridge within a shorter period of time.”
The Joint Assembly will discuss the £4.6m package on 14 June before members of the Executive Board meet on 4 July to make a final decision. If approved by the Executive Board on 4 July, work on the package could begin in August.
Public consultations on the final route options for the Barton to Cambridge Greenway and Haslingfield to Cambridge Greenway will also be launched on June 25.
The six-week public consultation on the Barton and Haslingfield Greenways routes will be held between June 18 and July 30.
The drop-in events will be held on:
28 June – 4-7pm – Haslingfield Endowed Primary School.
4 July – 4-7pm – Haslingfield Village Hall
5 July – 4-7pm – Cambridge Rugby Football Club
11 July – 4-7pm – Barton CE Primary School
