A cyclist was involved in a collision with a car on the 'Dutch-style' Fendon Road roundabout in Cambridge, the ambulance service said.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said a cyclist was assessed at the scene but did not require hospital treatment after the accident on Thursday (November 12).

A resident who lives nearby told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that a bike wheel was bent by the collision.

The county council spent £2.4million transforming the Fendon Road roundabout into a so-called Dutch-style design, which gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians over motorists. The roundabout features a partially segregated cycle lane, red in colour, which crosses over each intersection and gives priority over motorists looking to enter and exit the roundabout.

The county council said the changes will “enhance safety,” with the intention to encourage more walking and cycling.

The eye-catching and novel design attracted national attention when it opened in July this year. But its critics have claimed the roundabout’s irregular layout risks compromising safety, rather than improving it. Cambridgeshire County Council was also criticised after the project’s costs rose from £800,000 to £2.4million.

It is as yet unclear from the statements provided by the emergency services as to where exactly on the roundabout the collision is said to have taken place.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “An ambulance attended to a cyclist who had been involved with a collision with a car on a roundabout on Queen Edith’s Way just after 3.30pm yesterday (Thursday, November 12). The cyclist was assessed at the scene and did not require transportation to hospital.”

A Cambridgeshire police spokesperson said: “We were called by the ambulance service at 3.40pm yesterday (November 12) to reports of a collision involving a car and a cyclist on Mowbray Road, Cambridge.

“Both parties remained at the scene where the cyclist was treated for minor injuries. They did not require hospital treatment.”
