CYCLOPS junction work due to be completed in Milton Road, Cambridge

Work to set up and configure the traffic signals at Cambridge’s second CYCLOPS junction will take place today (Thursday).

The Greater Cambridge Partnership will carry out the commissioning of the signals at the Milton Road/King’s Hedges junction on Thursday, 5 September.

The work will be carried out during off-peak hours to minimise the disruption for people travelling to and from school and work.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, GCP’s head of programme, said: “The design of this junction has been developed to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists of all ages and abilities to safely navigate the junction while allowing traffic to flow. This was one of the key principles residents and communities asked for from this project.

“While the commissioning takes place, the junction's capacity to allow traffic to filter through will be reduced so we encourage people using the area to allow additional time for any journeys they may be making on 5 September.

“The temporary traffic signals will then be removed overnight with just a small section of a footpath left to be surfaced – which could not be carried out with the temporary signals in place – before it is fully complete.”

Cycling Optimised Protected Signals junction – known as a CYCLOPS – segregates pedestrians and cyclists from motorised traffic to improve safety for all road users. The GCP published a video earlier this year showing how the junctions work to help build confidence among users.

The GCP’s £32m Milton Road project aims to enhance bus and active travel and journeys along this key route in and out of Cambridge.

All major work on the Milton Road project is expected to be completed by the end of September, with the remaining residual works being picked up in the following weeks.
