Drink-driver urinated in police van after he was found asleep in vehicle at Ely Leisure Park
A drink-driver who urinated in a police van while being transported to custody has been disqualified from driving.
Members of the public called police around 9am on 19 November to report a man slumped over the steering wheel of his parked white Ford Transit Van.
Police arrived at Ely Leisure Park and found Glen Begley, 35, of Ely Road, Littleport, asleep in the van with a number of alcohol bottles in the passenger’s seat.
Begley was arrested and taken to custody and while being transported he urinated in the back of the police van.
In custody Begley provided an evidential reading of 61 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35 micrograms.
Begley pleaded guilty at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (12 December) to criminal damage and being in charge of a motor vehicle whilst unfit through drink. He was disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay a £1,166 fine.
The case comes as part of Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s festive campaign cracking down on drink and drug drivers, with a warning that doing so could destroy lives forever.
Officers are carrying out roadside checks throughout and people are also being reminded of the 24/7 confidential, dedicated hotline to report drink and drug drivers on 0800 032 0845. If someone is in immediate danger, always call 999.
