Drink-driver went wrong way round roundabout on A1198

A 52-year-old drink-driver who went the wrong way round a roundabout into the path of a police car has lost his licence.

Officers from the road policing unit were on patrol on the A1198 on the evening of 3 November when they almost drove into James Abogaye, who was driving a red Land Rover Discovery.

Initially the driver sat in his vehicle looking confused before reversing and driving the correct way. However, suspecting something was not right, officers pulled over Abogaye in Ermine Way, Godmanchester.

Abogaye, of Beech Close, Huntingdon, blew 105 at the roadside, three times the legal limit of 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath. He failed to provide an evidential sample in custody.

Aboagye was disqualified from driving for three years at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday (18 November) after pleading guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

PC Sam Shepherd, from the road policing unit, said: “It is lucky that Abogaye didn’t cause an accident that evening.

“For anyone who considers getting behind the wheel after drinking because they think they can get away with it, just remember that police officers could be anywhere. We also encourage members of the public to call in suspected drink and drug drivers.”
