East Cambridgeshire District council leader Anna Bailey ‘chuffed’ after Conservatives hold control of council
Conservative leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council Anna Bailed said she was "chuffed" by the results of today's election count which saw the Conservatives hold onto power, but with a reduced lead.
A full election was held on Thursday (May 4), with all 28 seats contested – and the Tories have emerged victorious.
Cllr Bailey spoke of her relief that in spite of the national picture, which has seen many Conservative losses, East Cambridgeshire has remained in Tory hands. She said: “"What I have seen in this election is that our core Conservative vote is still there, still with us.
“People want to see nationally some really key things being dealt with. They want to see the cost of living crisis coming back under control, so people start feeling better. But I believe in Rishi to do that. This result shows the East Cambs electorate is still with us and it gives me hope for the General Election".
She put the Conservatives’ continuing success in East Cambridgeshire down to a handful of reasons: “We have had 10 years of council tax freezes in east cambridgeshire we have carried on with free car parking - these are the things that matter to our residents. We have pumped millions into community projects across the district and I think this is a reflection of four years of very hard work and a massive campaign that we have run and I want to thank my campaign team who have just done a fantastic job.”
Cllr Bailey admitted that the Liberal Democrats had gained some ground in Thursday’s election.
She said: “We have had some difficult losses this evening from hardworking people. They deserved to get it, there have been some specific local issues that we have had to deal with but it’s a fantastic result and I couldn’t be happier.”
