Emergency services tackle lorry fire on A14

The A14 was closed today (Thursday, July 5) following a lorry fire westbound near Fen Ditton.

Cambridgeshire police confirmed that emergency services were at the scene and a full lane closure was in place on the westbound carriageway following the fire just before junction 34 B1047 Horningsea Road.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue service had 30 firefighters tackling the blaze, which begun shortly after 9am, with crews from Cambridge, Burwell, Sawston, and Cottenham at the scene along with Suffolk firefighters from Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill.

Station Commander Vinnie Crook said shortly after 11am: “Currently on the A14 through Stow cum Quy and Milton on the A14 westbound and we are attending a lorry fire in a removals truck.

“Currently we have crews from Suffolk and Cambridgeshire working to extinguish the fire as we look for a way to reopen the carriageway.

“Currently the A14 westbound is closed. Diversions will be in place and if at all possible try to avoid the area until we can reopen fully.

“This may take up to two to four hours. At the moment, we are still working to resolve the incident and will provide further updates as we know.”

The road reopened around 1pm.
