A planning application could soon be submitted for a 153-room Premier Inn hotel on Cambridge's East Road.

The hotel plan forms part of a wider scheme to regenerate The Grafton area of the city.

“The plan offers an opportunity to deliver regeneration, improve the public realm along East Road and add to the diversity of uses in this part of the city,” the proposals, which have been on show in The Grafton, state.

Under the scheme, which has been produced by developer Wrenbridge and The Grafton landowner Legal & General Property, the eight-storey hotel will have 153 rooms and a restaurant/bar on the ground floor.

There will also be improvements made to the shopping centre entrance on East Road. The area is currently home to a bus station, which will remain, and a large service yard.

The site has also been identified for a hotel in the Grafton Area Masterplan, which has been approved by Cambridge City Council and is supported in the new Cambridge local plan.

“Opportunities to redevelop the edges of The Grafton will initiate a step change in the quality of the area, establishing a more sensitive transition between city centre activities and the domestic scale of the surrounding conservation areas,” the masterplan reads.

A consultation will follow the exhibition later this month, prior to the submission of a planning application, according to the proposals.

“This will provide an opportunity for the team to give feedback about comments received and provide information about amendments made to the proposals in response,” the developers said.

The scheme would also provide a range of improvements to the public areas around The Grafton.

This includes a new square with a raised lawn, a water feature, seating and paved areas providing routes from the road to the cinema plaza and pedestrian route to the Premier Inn and The Grafton, which has already had a £28million refurbishment.

Trees and planting will be used to create a barrier between the site and the road.
