The Extinction Rebellion protest will continue the blockade in Corn Exchange Street for “the remainder of the day”.

Cars are able to leave the Grand Arcade car park, but are not able to enter.

The purpose of the Black Friday protest by XR Cambridge is to bring attention to the way consumerism is contributing to the climate crisis.

“A throwaway culture and cheap consumerism is killing the planet and enslaving the global south,” the group tweeted.

Cambridge City Council is reporting major congestion in and around the city centre as a result of the ongoing protests, which follows an earlier climate change protest.

It said: “If you are heading into the city centre please plan your journey carefully and avoid affected areas if you can.”
