Cambridgeshire firefighters issue reminder to get chimneys swept after two house fires in a day

Firefighters from Cambridge were called to two chimney fires on Saturday and issued a reminder to householders to get their chimneys swept before lighting them for the first time this autumn.

They were called at 3.49pm to a fire at a home in High Street, Lode, and at 9.29pm to a fire in a house on Middlemoor Road in Whittlesford.

A fire service spokesman said: “Please ensure that you get your chimney swept and brick work inspected regularly, at least once a year. The debris buildup in the flue can be set alight when heating the home, which could cause a significant fire. Regular chimney maintenance will help prevent this from happening.”

“As the cold weather begins to arrive, it is important to get your chimney swept before lighting it for the first time.”
