Owner Alison Wright said: “The front section of 52 Trumpington Street has now become part of the restaurant and tearoom, so there are lovely window tables with great views.”

And it will need a cake of its own as the bakery, famed for its Chelsea buns, has just turned 103 years old.

“It is good timing for a new chapter and new lease of life,” said Alison.

“I felt a lot in common with the original founders, Ernest and Arthur Mason, who must have felt exactly the same pressures and experienced the same early mornings and late nights as they completed their fit-out to be ready for the new university term.”
