Alan Cox, 46, of Byron Square, Trumpington, Cambridge, is due to appear at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday, July 7).

Mr Cox was arrested in November last year and was charged by police on Friday, June 10 this year.

He was elected to the city council’s Trumpington ward in May last year, representing the Liberal Democrat group.

The city council said Mr Cox resigned from his role as councillor on Tuesday, June 28.

The Cambridge Independent approached the Liberal Democrat group, who declined to comment at this stage but confirmed that Mr Cox was suspended from the group at the time of his resignation.

His profile page on the Cambridge Liberal Democrat website no longer exists.

According to the Cambridge City Council website, Mr Cox last attended a meeting of the full council on May 26.

A by-election for the Trumpington ward has been set for Thursday, August 18.

Residents wishing to vote in the by-election, who are not already on the electoral register, should register by Tuesday, August 2.

People can register to vote online at gov.uk/register-to-vote if they have their National Insurance number to hand – a process which will only take a few minutes. Anyone without access to the internet can request a paper registration form by phoning the council on 01223 457048.
