A former police dog, who spent his career searching out explosives, has died.

The combined Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire police dog unit announced the death of former detective, PD Benji, on Wednesday, December 27.

Benji was retired to his handler in 2013.

The police dog unit has more than 30 handlers and 40 dogs to detect drugs, cash and ammunition and they are used in some of the three forces’ most dangerous police operations.
