Full list of all Cambridgeshire schools closed or finishing early on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 amid heatwave
Twenty-five schools across Cambridgeshire have confirmed they will close or finish early on Tuesday (July 19), when record temperatures are expected.
Forecasters suggest the nation’s temperature record of 38.7C - recorded at Cambridge University Botanic Garden in 2019 - could be broken on Tuesday.
A stifling 41C is forecast for Cambridge, with the temperature at its peak around 3-4pm.
On Monday, the mercury hit 38.1C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, by 4pm, making it the hottest day of the year. Temperatures topped 37C in a number of other places.
The University of Cambridge weather station recorded a high of 36.1C in Cambridge at 5.30pm on Monday.
The Department for Education has urged schools to stay open where they can.
But a number of headteachers have decided they cannot do so safely amid the heatwave and have opted to close or finish around lunchtime on Tuesday. In some cases, parents have been offered the option of collecting their children early, or leaving them at school until the normal time.
Some schools - including all those in the Eastern Learning Alliance, such as Impington Village College, Chesterton Community College, Witchford Village College and Girton Glebe Primary - closed on Monday too, following the Met Office issuing its first ever red alert for extreme heat.
Parents have been divided on the issue, with some arguing school classrooms are simply too hot for teaching, while others pointing out that it is hard for many people to take time off work at short notice.
