General Election 2019: When will the results be known in Cambridgeshire?
After the polls close at 10pm this evening (Thursday), the counting begins - but when we can expect the General Election results in our area?
That partly depends on the turnout and the number of votes to count, but using previous General Elections as a guide, estimates can be made of the times of declaration.
The Huntingdon result is the first expected in the county, at about 2am.
For Cambridge, South Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and North West Cambridgeshire, the results are predicted at about 3am.
North East Cambridgeshire is expected to declare at about 4am.
In South East Cambridgeshire, meanwhile, you may have to wait until 5am to see the results.
Recounts in any of these areas would, of course, delay the declaration. And with the latest YouGov poll suggesting South Cambridgeshire could be a tight contest between Conservative Anthony Browne and the Liberal Democrat Ian Sollom there, you may want to bed in for the night on the sofa.
Nationally, though, we’ll get an idea of which way the election may have gone from the exit poll at 10pm.
The first result is expected by 11pm. Newcastle and Sunderland have battled each year to declare the first result. Newcastle is forecasting the result from the first seat will be 11pm, while Sunderland is suggesting it could be late this year due to wintry conditions, meaning some seats in the area may not be known until 1.30am.
The Prime Minister’s own constituency - Uxbridge and South Ruislip - is expected to declare at about 4.30am. A five per cent swing there would, remarkably, unseat Boris Johnson, who had a relatively slender majority of 5,034 votes at the last election.
