Get in on the ACT with a family run
Lace up your running shoes, it's time to get training for the 2018 Grantchester Charity Runs.
Hundreds are expected to go the distance through the South Cambridgeshire countryside in support of Maggie’s Centre Cambridge and Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.
This will be the ninth year of the event and looks to be the biggest yet, held in partnership with the Cambridge Independent. Registration is now open for the 10km, 3km and 3km assisted under-12s races, taking place of Sunday, September 30.
Christie Marrian, one of the race organisers, said: “The course is quite flat so people record some very fast times and it’s across mixed terrain, so it’s really good fun.
“We pride ourselves on being family friendly (there’s a family registration special) and encourage runners of all ages, including parents with buggies, and have had many canine participants over the years.
“It’s a run through attractive farmland in Grantchester, so there are no road crossings and no road closures.”
The 10km race is chip timed and there are also team entries for groups of friends, colleagues, companies, families or clubs – the best four times count.
Christie continued: “We’re really hoping to raise some funds and support for our charities.
“The race is organised by people from Grantchester and the surrounding villages, and many of us are from the cricket club. Being from south of Cambridge, we have something of an affinity with Addenbrooke’s and we’ve been supporting them for the past six years.
“Last year we helped raise funds for the haematology unit, and for the children’s ward the year before that.”
This year the run will support ACT’s campaign to bring a liver perfusion machine, a revolutionary device for assessing and storing donated livers for extended periods of time, to Addenbrooke’s. The machine would be the first of its kind in UK.
“We’re also working with Maggie’s, which is a support service for people with cancer. We think it’s such an impressive team and they provides a real calm in what must be such a ghastly experience.”
Early Bird rates are available until July 22.
