Bar Hill cyclist named on British longlist

Hayley Simmonds has been named on Great Britain’s longlist for the UCI Road World Championships in Bergen.

The 29-year-old Bar Hill-based cyclist is one of 11 riders under consideration for the event from September 17 to 24.

Britain will cut their squad down to seven riders for the road race, with two riders to also contest the time trial.

Simmonds selection on the longlist comes after she won her fourth successive British National 10-mile time-trial victory last weekend.

The Team WNT Pro Cycling member had gone into the event in Cumbria as favourite, and did not disappoint.

Simmonds set a time of 20min 57sec on the A66 Cockermouth course, and it proved too good to beat as she claimed victory by 43 seconds.

She is joined on Britain’s longlist by London Olympics silver medallist Lizzie Deignan, 2012 track gold medallist Dani King, Elinor Barker and Alice and Hannah Barnes.
