In pictures: Grandmaster Michael Adams wins first Cambridge International Open Chess Tournament at University Arms Hotel
The first Cambridge International Open Chess Tournament took place at the University Arms Hotel, with seven-time British champion Michael Adams emerging victorious.
The grandmaster, who reached the rank of world number four between the years of 2000 and 2002, finished in top spot on eight points, taking home £1,500. He was just clear of fellow grandmaster Daniel Fernandez, who won £750 for coming second on 7.5 points.
A group of four players, including reigning British champion and international master Harry Grieve, grandmaster Oleg Korneev, international master Boris Golubovic and FIDE master Nghia Bao Dong finished next on seven points following the February 15-19 tournament.
Harriett Hunt was the highest placed female player with 5.5 points, followed by WCM Nina Pert on five points and Julia Volovich also on five.
The nine-round Swiss system tournament featured 121 players from 19 federations, with players travelling from as far away as the US and Vietnam.
Supported by the hotel on Parker’s Piece, the event was organised by English Chess Federation events director Shohreh Bayat who was aided by fellow international arbiter Matthew Carr and FIDE arbiter Satish Gaekwad.

The tournament was open to all English and foreign players with FIDE ID.
