In pictures: Real buzz at Duxford Soapbox Derby
From beekeepers to Batman, there were certainly some eye-catching costumes and carts on display in the streets of Duxford as the village held its annual Soapbox Derby last Sunday (1 September).
Andy Yates, chairman of the Duxford Soapbox Derby Committee, said the popular event, established in 2013 to raise money for Cancer Research UK in memory of Phill Hill, went really well, with all three races (the 4-7 and 8-11-year-olds race, the 12-15-year-olds race and the adult’s race) going off “without a hitch”.
“We had three teams of 4-7-year-olds, we had seven in the 8-11 category, and then we had two in the 12-15,” explained Andy.
“We had 12 teams take to the streets in the adult’s race – so it’s one of the biggest ones I think we’ve held.
“It was very well-attended – and I believe we’ve raised quite a significant amount of money for Cancer Research UK.”

The 4-7 category was won by Hot Diggity Dogs (Theo Harris and Remy Sethi). It’s Corn (Edward Lober and Tom Varley) finished first among the 8-11-year-olds, while in the 12-15 race, Sawston 2461 Air Cadets (Aaron Grafham-Karp and Alexander Graham) emerged victorious.
A team called ‘Arthur Rank’, which consisted of Nathan Littlefair and Scott Linsdell – and which was named after Arthur Rank Hospice – won the adult’s race.
Andy noted that “quite a few people from outside the village came” and calls the turnout “absolutely amazing”, adding: “There was such great support as well for the raffle and the auctions that happened afterwards, and also music from a local band called The Spree.”
A cheque presentation evening will be held on 9 October at The Plough in Duxford at 7.30pm.
