In pictures: See Cambridge University Botanic Garden in a different light this festive season
Cambridge University Botanic Garden (CUBG) is awash with colour this festive season, its first ever lights trail providing a beautiful way to celebrate the garden’s landscape and plant collection.
Visitors can enter via the Station Road gate or Brookside gate and, as soon as they do, they will enjoy installations that highlight the garden’s collection of plants and most popular features – for example, there is a huge projection showing some of the site’s most iconic plants as well as glowing lilies on the lake. A light tunnel and disco ball add an extra element of fun too.
Helen Needham, of CUBG, says the trail, which began last Friday (December 1) and runs every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until December 22, has been a “huge success” so far, adding that people have commented that the trail was much larger than they expected.
“On our social media pages we’re getting lots of people saying lots of wonderful things about it,” said Helen. “Everyone seems to have a different favourite aspect, and we don’t want to show all the different things because it’s nice, I think, for some element of surprise as people walk round.”
The trail is suitable for all ages and is accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs. It takes approximately an hour to complete but visitors can go around as many times as they like. There are also hot drinks and snacks available.

Helen reveals that there was a marriage proposal over the weekend in the light tunnel (the answer was yes). She also notes that there are still tickets available. For more information, visit botanic.cam.ac.uk.
