In pictures: St Catharine’s choir lights up Christmas at Luminaria celebration

St Catharine’s College’s spectacular Luminaria: A Celebration of Light event proved an early Christmas treat for hundreds of visitors.

Watching from the University of Cambridge college’s main court, they enjoyed the sound of the girls’ choir to festive illuminations.

The event, on December 12, raised more than £230 for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.

Dr Edward Wickham, fellow and director of music at St Catharine’s College, said: “Founded in 2008, the girls’ choir at St Catharine’s is the first college-based choir for girls in the whole of the UK and supports young singers from the Cambridge area and beyond.

“The annual Luminaria Christmas event is a highlight of the college calendar and it was a pleasure to throw open our gates to the public again and enjoy together the vocal talents of our choristers against the magical backdrop of a light show in our historical main court.”

St Catharine’s welcomed six new choristers this year. Audrey, Beyza, Ellen, Gabriella, Olivia and Tallulah were officially inducted as choristers on St Catharine’s Day – November 25 – when they received their surplices, the white robe which goes on top of the red cassock.
