Looking for new golf clubs? Try AFGolf Store’s free custom-fitting option in Melbourn - or pick up great gifts for any player
The AF Golf Store at Kingsway Royston in Melbourn is the perfect place to find your new set of clubs, as it offers free custom-fitting - and then it can build them for you.
“We can fit with all the leading brands in golf. We have more than 10,000 combinations of choice between head models, shaft models and grip models,” said Chris Hattersley, from AF Golf Store.
“We use leading technology. Trackman helps us ascertain the customer’s specifications and we can then build in our Peterborough store. Everybody is different, so everyone needs custom-fitting, and we offer that as a free service.”
If you’re buying for someone else, then you could always opt for a gift voucher.
And of course the store is well stocked with balls, glove clothing and other stocking fillers.
But if it’s a new club you want - whether it’s a driver, a set of irons, a putter or the whole bag - then the custom-fit service is the option for you.
“It’s a 60 to 90-minute session - a full bag fitting is 90 minutes,” explains Chris.
“We will start off by getting the player to hit some balls with their own clubs in our custom fit studio and we’ll get to know the player. You’ll be hitting a real golf ball into open air, but you’ll be sheltered. Trackman technology will identify what the current specifications are and we’ll get your static measurements are.
“The best player is going to play with a higher calibre of golf club. We’re not going to put a golf club in your hands that is going to outperform you.
“Clubs come with an array of characteristics - forgiveness being the one everyone tends to go for. But as you get better you are going to want to look at clubs that encourage more ball speed, more distance and better dispersion, which a more forgiving club might not give you.
“Trackman picks up ball characteristics. It’s a radar and the minute you hit the ball, it will pick up within three seconds how far the ball has gone, how fast it was spinning, the ball speed, the clubhead speed and all that information will enable us to understand the flexibility of shaft that’s required.
“Different heads and drivers are designed to spin at different speeds. If you are spinning the ball a lot because of the way you hit the ball, we’ll look at clubs that reduce spin.
“We are always looking for performance gains. We’re not here to sell for the sake of it.”
And while the store offers all six of the major brands, and stocks all their current models, they are unbiased when working out what to offer each customer.
“We need to find out which brands will work best for you. Not having the right clubs in your hand is often the road to performing poorly,” says Chris.
You can order for Christmas until around December 20.
The store, which opens seven days a week, also offers golf lessons.
“We have a coaching team that offer tailored golf lessons of 30 minutes or 60 minutes,” says Chris. “They are held in a private bay, with you and your coach. Coming up to Christmas, it’s a great gift option.”
