‘Lucky escape’ for diners as car crashes into Zara restaurant in Great Shelford
A car crashed into Zara Indian restaurant in Great Shelford, but fortunately no one was hurt. The white vehicle smashed through the wall of the popular eatery on the night of Tuesday, July 25.
Khaled Ahmed, co-owner of the restaurant, said: "The incident took place right at the front of the building, near the bar area. Luckily, at the time, all of our customers were seated at the back of the restaurant – and no-one was at the front. Our main concern was everyone's safety.”
About 20 people, including staff, were in the restaurant when the crash happened at about 7.30pm. Khaled added: “It was quite scary but luckily no-one was in the bar area – usually it is quite busy. We had a lucky escape, but thankfully everyone is fine.”
The driver of the car was assessed by paramedics over the phone and checked at the scene by police officers, before being taken home by one of the restaurant’s customers.
The car was removed after a building inspector confirmed it was safe to do so, and work to fix the damage took place the following day. The restaurant was deemed safe to reopen on Thursday evening, just two days after the incident.
