Parts of the M11 in Cambridgeshire which have not been updated since the '70s are to be resurfaced.

The £2million project will see Highways England start work on Thursday, November 19, on the M11 spur between junction 9 and the A11 Ickleton.

Highways England said the surface of the M11 was laid during the '70s, meaning some parts are as old as famous films like the first ever Star Wars movie (1977) and Grease (1978).

Decades of use and hundreds of millions of journeys have left the road in need of a vital upgrade which will improve safety, boost ride quality and reduce noise, it added.

As well as resurfacing and repairing potholes, the project will also see new road markings and road studs laid, and drains cleared.

Karl Brooks, Highways England programme delivery manager, said: “Helping to connect London with the East of England, thousands of drivers use the M11 every day for work journeys, visits to friends and family, and the movement of the goods and services.

“The surface of this road was laid in the 1970s, and despite serving us well it’s coming towards the end of its life and needs vital repairs. Our work will make this stretch of the M11 smoother and safer, ensuring it is fit for us as we head into the winter months.”

For the safety of workers and motorists, Highways England will close the M11 spur between junction 9 and the A11/A505 junction near Great Abington. Work will be carried out between 8pm and 6am on the Thursday and Friday, with a full weekend closure from 8pm on the Friday until 6am on Monday, November 20.

During the closures, traffic should follow the diversions:

Diversion for drivers heading north on the M11:

  • Continue northbound and exit the M11 at junction 10 onto the A505, then follow the A505 towards Newmarket to join the A11 near Pamisford.

Diversion for drivers heading south on the A11:

  • Exit the A11 onto the A505 and join the M11 southbound at junction 10.
