A cyclist who died following a collision on the guided busway on Thursday (September 13) has been named.

Steve Moir, 50, of Plantation Road, Sawston was cycling along the busway at about 4.50pm when he was involved in a collision with a bus. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, Councillor Steve Count, leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “We are saddened by this tragic news and send our sympathies to the victim’s family.”

There were calls earlier this summer for fences to keep cyclists and pedestrians on the path separate from the buses that use the busway on the stretch south from the city railway station to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Trumpington Park & Ride.

On June 11, a 39-year-old pedestrian needed hospital treatment after being clipped by the wing mirror of a bus close to Long Road.

While in November 2015, an 81-year-old woman pedestrian died after a collision with a bus on the busway near Station Road, Swavesey. Jennifer Taylor, of Meadow Lane, Over, had been walking in the dark with her husband, who was not injured.

In July 2017, Whippet Coaches sacked a driver who had veered off the busway in Trumpington three weeks earlier, reportedly to avoid cyclists, after it emerged he had been travelling above 20mph in a 15mph zone.
