Man sexually assaulted woman at Cambridge bus stop and robbed vulnerable man

A man sexually assaulted a woman at a Cambridge bus stop and robbed a vulnerable man on the same day.

Fatai Olaiya, 48, tried to grab a backpack from a man sleeping on a bench on Midsummer Common, at about 1.30am on September 1 last year.

After punching him repeatedly, Olaiya made off with the backpack containing items including his passport, a laptop and an iPad.

Then at about 7.30am, Olaiya approached a young woman waiting at a bus stop in Cherry Hinton High Street.

He asked her where the nearest branch of Cash Converters was and showed her the stolen iPad.

Olaiya made sexual comments and stroked her hair, before touching her side and moving his hand down to her waist.

He was arrested about an hour later and the stolen items were recovered from a nearby shop, where he had tried to sell them.

Olaiya, of Eardley Road, London, admitted robbery and sexual assault.

He was sentenced on Tuesday (September 27) at Cambridge Crown Court to three years and 10 months in prison.

Det Con Joseph Fourie said: “The robbery victim had recently been made homeless, so to then be subjected to this ordeal as well is awful. The rucksack also contained medication and important documentation, which added to his distress.

“Olaiya’s actions towards the woman at the bus stop were disgraceful. Nobody should ever be subjected to this type of behaviour.

“We’ve been working hard to improve the way we respond to incidents involving violence against women and girls, building long-term cultural change and restoring public confidence.”
