Mum with 11-month-old baby in car tested positive for cocaine

A 42-year-old mum who had an 11-month-old child in her car has been banned from driving after failing a roadside drugs test.

Concerned members of the public called police on 13 July to report Sarah Holmes parked up in a silver Mazda, at Roswell Pits in Ely, suspected to be taking drugs.

Police caught up with Holmes as she was driving back to her home in Foxglove Way with her 11-month-old child in the front of the car.

Holmes failed a roadside drug test for cocaine, but failed to provide an evidential blood sample in custody. Checks also revealed she had no driving licence or insurance.

Holmes was given a 12 month community at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Friday (19 September) order after previously pleading guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving without insurance and driving without a licence. She was also disqualified from driving for three years and four months.

PC Kieren Ellis said: “Driving under the influence of drugs, especially with a child in the car, is incredibly dangerous and completely unacceptable.

“Thanks to the vigilance of the public and our officers, who take these reports extremely seriously, we were able to intervene and prevent further risk.

“We will continue to take robust action against those who put others at risk on our roads.”
