The Liberal Democrat, who represented the Newnham ward, resigned the role this week.

She will continue as a county councillor for Newnham.

Ms Nethsingha said: “My role in the European Parliament officially starts on July 1 and it is a very important one at this critical time for our country. It obviously means being in Brussels or Strasbourg part of the working week where I will fight for EU action on climate change as well as campaigning hard to keep the UK a full member of the European Union.

“I will continue as county councillor for Newnham and there are county council projects I have been championing that I want to continue to push forward.

“It is important that an MEP for the East of England stays closely connected with the people of the region and it helps in the fight against Brexit that I continue to represent an area that feels so strongly about the disaster that would come from our departing the EU.

“With my new role, I do need to lighten my pre-existing commitments and so have stood down from the city council and I look forward to working closely with my replacement.

“I would like to thank Newnham residents for their support during my time as a city councillor.”

A by-election for her city council seat will now follow.
