In a statement posted on social media, police said: “We have been notified of an email which is being circulated to several schools, some of which are in Cambridgeshire. Cambridgeshire is not the only county to receive the message, and similar emails have been reported nationally over the past week.

“At this time there is no specific identified threat to schools within our county however local schools have been advised to review their protocols and be vigilant.”

In an update, the force added: “We are investigating but believe the email to be a hoax. We will update further once we are in a position to do so.”

A spokesperson for education authority Cambridgeshire County Council said: “We have contacted all schools in Cambridgeshire regarding a message circulating on social media. We do not have any evidence to suggest there is a genuine threat but we are in contact with the police as a precaution.

“All schools have processes in place to keep children and young people safe. We have advised schools to continue as normal and be vigilant.”
