Paul Kirkley: Stars aligned in Lib Dem heartland





What’s the difference between the stars in that Coldplay song and South Cambridgeshire District Council? The first are all yellow, while the second is only 82 per cent yellow.

OK, it’s not a very funny joke, granted. But it is a statistically accurate one, after the Lib Dems increased their dominance over South Cambs at last month’s local elections, taking 37 of the 45 seats, and reducing the Conservatives to a rump of just eight.

In the People’s Socialist Republic of Cambridge, meanwhile, Labour consolidated its grip on the city, where the Tories are an extinct species. Even HuntingJohnMajorShire, which has been solid blue since the dawn of time, went to no overall control.
