Paul Kirkley: The Mill Road to nowhere

Another month, and another twist – if that’s not too exciting a word – in the endless, dreary saga of the Mill Road bridge.

Seriously, how are we still talking about this? It’s a row that seems to have been rumbling on in the periphery of my vision for longer than there have been cars – possibly longer than there have been bridges – and, full disclosure, I’m still not entirely sure what it’s all about.

So, in the interests of journalism and stuff, I finally forced myself to make an effort to understand the basics. To whit: Cambridgeshire County Council tried to impose traffic restrictions on the bridge, a local campaign group successfully challenged the proposals (landing the council with £26,800 legal costs) and now the authority has launched a consultation on installing a bus gate, while the campaign group has launched a new petition.
