Police appeal for information after grenade attack in Cambridge pub

Police are appealing for information that will help them identify the culprits behind a smoke grenade attack at a Cambridge pub ahead of the United’s Checkatrade trophy clash with rivals Peterborough on Tuesday night (November 7).

The grenades, which can be bought in shops for as little at £1.99, produce heavy smoke after the fuse has been released and one of them was detonated at the Grain and Hop Store pub on Regent Street where a large number of fans had congegrated.

There was already a heavy police presence in the area in a bid to prevent the fans clashing. The pub was evacuated once the grenade had been used but re-opened shortly afterwards at 7.45pm.

Despite the attendeance of both paramedics and the police, no injuries were reported and Peterborough fans were ewscorted to the Cambs Glass staidum for the game which Posh won 2-0.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “At about 6.20pm yesterday (7 November) a smoke grenade was set off at the Grain and Hop Store in Regent Terrace, Cambridge, causing the premises to be evacuated.

“Officers were already in attendance due to the football match between Cambridge United and Peterborough United. They prevented disorder and escorted away fans to the stadium.

“The grenade has been recovered and the incident is being investigated. No arrests have been made and no injuries reported.”
