Police hunt raiders after bungled ATM theft bid in Cambridgeshire village
Three men fled empty-handed after raid on Co-op ATM in Burwell
Police have launched a hunt for bungling ram raiders who failed in an attempt to steal a cash machine from premises in the village of Burwell.
Raiders tried to smash into a cash machine in a 4x4 vehicle but fled the scene empty-handed.
Three men attacked the ATM machine at the Co-op in North Street, Burwell at 3.15am this morning (November 22).
Police cordoned off the scene and immediately launched an appeal for information as part of their investigations.
A spokesman for the Co-op, said: “An incident occurred at our North Street, Burwell, store at around 3.30am in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, 22 November).
“CCTV has been shared with police who are investigating the attack on the store’s ATM.
“The Co-op takes retail crime very seriously, and implements a range of measures to both deter criminal activity and to aid convictions, and we appeal for anyone with information to come forward. It is too early to confirm when we will be able to re-open the store to serve the community.”
A police spokesman said: “This was a failed attempt made to steal the ATM and lots of damage was caused. A 4X4 vehicle was used and headed off towards Exning.
“At least three people in balaclavas were involved and the vehicle is described as a silver/grey hatchback with a black roof.”
