Porsche's Panamera Sport Turismo was launched at the marque's Harston dealership this month, with particular emphasis placed on the hybrid options as the German marque confirmed that its motorsport activity from now on will concentrate on Formula E.

"Porsche is leaving motor sport at the end of the season to focus on Formula E,Angus Fitton, head of PR at Porsche Cars GB, told a packed audience, which included car journalist and TV presenter Vicki Butler Henderson.

The FIA Formula E championship for all-electric cars only was conceived in 2012, and Porsche's first all-electric saloon, the Mission E concept, is well into the testing phase.

The Panamera Sport Turismo showcases Porsche's hybrid technology. Of five Panamera options available when the car goes on sale in mid-November, two will be hybrids. They are the 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo and the Turbo S 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, with the 4 Sport Turismo, 4S Sport Turismo and Turbo Sport Turismo being petrol-only. Prices range from £73,071 for the 4 Sport Turismo up to £117,247 for the Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo.

"We're on the verge of the 70th anniversary of Porsche's first sports car, centre principal Dan Jones told guests."We're looking to our past for the future and the Sport Turismo represents Porsche's traditional values with infotainment and a full suite of Porsche Connect Services. The electrical system is so powerful it could power a building. On a 466bhp hybrid drivetrain, half the power comes from electric motors."

The entry-level 2.9-litre V6 Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is anticipated to be the biggest seller. Priced from £83,288, the 'four-plus-one' seat, eight-speed hybrid starter saloon has a top speed of 170mph and a 0-60mph acceleration of 4.6 seconds. C02 emissions are an astonishingly low 56g/km, with fuel use standing at 113mpg. The 466bhp powertrain is divvied up into a 330bhp petrol unit and a 136bhp electric unit.

Listening to this was Vicki Butler Henderson, currently residing in Cambridge with her two young children. As well as being a British racing driver, Vicki is also a cyclist, ferrying around her youngsters on a three-wheel bike."You have to, to get around Cambridge, she said of her ?cycling routine.

"The demonstrators and first cars for delivery are due in November,Mr Jones said."The hybrid is definitely gaining significant momentum and if you then combine the Turbo S with the hybrid you get a configuration of 3.4 seconds to 60mph on full boost.

"I think you'll see people leaning towards that, and that's where we're going. E-mobility is now a key strategy for Porsche and you'll see that, especially over the next two years. Dynamically these cars are brilliant.

"Perceptions of luxury are changing - it's not about what you own, it's about what you do, and with the Panamera we've created a car that can do a bit moreナ"
