Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh visits Cambridge’s ADC Theatre
As one of the stops on today (Tuesday, 5 November)’s trip to Cambridge, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, paid a visit to the ADC Theatre, of which he is patron.
His Royal Highness, an alumnus of Jesus College, Cambridge, met with representatives of the community involved in the life of the theatre: staff, students and representatives of the ADC executive committee, together with theatre volunteers and leaders of several of the town’s amateur theatre groups.
During the visit the Duke was entertained by the cast of this week’s show Sister Act, put on by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society, who have their opening night this evening.
They performed two popular numbers from the show before the duke met with the whole company on stage.
The duke’s visit was timed to coincide with the retirement of the theatre’s chair, Dr Mark Billinge, who warmly thanked the duke both for his visit and for his continuing interest in the theatre’s activities and wellbeing.
Ahead of the visit, Olivia Wheeler, theatre manager, told the Cambridge Independent: “The visit is to coincide with the retirement of the chairman of the theatre’s executive committee, Dr Mark Billinge, who’s been in the post for over a decade.
“It’s the duke’s first official visit to the theatre since 2016.”
