According to online property website Rightmove, the average price of a house in Cambridge is £472,590, which means that the vast majority of UK citizens will never be able to afford to buy here.

Indeed, as of last November, the average house price in the UK stood at £217,928, up 1.1 per cent compared to the previous month and by 6.7 per cent in a year.

However, if your heart is set on living in Cambridge, all is not lost. There are other options available at a slightly more reasonable price – as well as schemes you could try, previously covered in the Cambridge Independent, such as Help to Buy.

The cheaper options may not be your dream home, but as a step up – or even onto – the property ladder, they may prove to be a sound investment – and with things the way they are, who knows how much your property might be worth in 10 or 20 years.

Here are six properties at £400,000 and under that might be worth a punt...

Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, a single bedroom and a modern bathroom. The decked loft, with installed light, is accessible via a drop-down ladder.

There is planning permission to substantially enlarge the property, by adding a loft conversion and single-storey rear extension and converting it to two substantial apartments.

The layout could easily be adapted to enlarge the house to four bedrooms, three bathrooms and three reception rooms.
