City Pub Company confirms purchase of iconic Cambridge building

The City Pub Company has confimed it has bought the fire ravaged former Tivoli pub on Mitcham’s Corner and hope to re-open it for business by the Spring of next year.

The company, which also owns the Old Bicycle Shop on Regent Street, The Mill, The Petersfield, The Cambridge Brewhouse and The Punt Yard, along with the recently refurbished Waterman, say they have exciting plans for the iconic building once clearance work on the site has been completed.

A spokesman for the Ciy Pub Company told the Cambridge Independent: “We’re pleased to confirm our purchase of The Tivoli on Mitcham’s Corner.

“At present we are in the process of clearing the site following the much publicised fire and a long period of being unused. Once cleared we will begin detailed plans for the building and look forward to providing further information to the local community and other future customers in due course.

“Suffice to say we’re hugely excited to reinvigorate this iconic site. We hope to be open for business in Spring 2019 so afraid it is a case of “watching this space for now.”

The sale of the pub comes after plans to bulldoze it and turn it into flats were ditched. Cambridge City Council refused planning permission for 16 flats on the site of the Tivoli last March.

It was destroyed in a devastating fire in 2015 and has been boarded up ever since.

It had been opened in 2010 by J D Wetherspoon who spent more than £1m on enhancing some of the art deco features from its time as a cinema.

The building along the River Cam has been a burned out shell since the fire but now looks destined for a new era.
