Cambridgeshire fell silent on Remembrance Sunday in honour of the fallen and there was a welcome return for in-person ceremonies after the pandemic forced last year’s to be scaled back.

In Cambridge, mayor Cllr Russ McPherson played the bagpipes as he led the parade from Station Road to the war memorial on Hills Road.

Representatives of the Armed Forces, the Royal British Legion and many other groups were present for the commemorative service, led by the Rev Devin McClachlan of Great St Mary’s Church, and for the two minutes’ silence.

Among those laying wreaths were the mayor, MP Daniel Zeichner, city council leader Cllr Lewis Herbert, High Sheriff Caroline Bewes and Chief Constable Nick Dean.

Cllr McPherson said he was “very pleased” that it was possible to meet up to mark Remembrance Sunday and said it was a “great honour” to represent the city for the solemn occasion, at which Pembroke Choir and Waterbeach Band performed.

Deputy mayor Cllr Mark Ashton was among those laying a wreath following a procession to the county, city and University of Cambridge’s annual service of remembrance and reconciliation at Great St Mary’s, which was streamed live on Youtube.

The preacher was Major (Retired) Lucy Lewis, university marshal, and among those attending was Sir James Paice, Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Bridget Kendall, along with other representatives of the city, university, Armed Forces, emergency services and other organisations.

The anthem was Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst - How lonely sits the city that was full of people - by Mauersberger, an organist at Holy Cross Church in Dresden, who wrote it following its destruction in 1945.

In Ely, there was a Remembrance Sunday service at the cathedral, a march through the town, a parade and an Act of Remembrance in the Market Square.

Villages across the county held their own ceremonies. In Toft, among the groups laying wreaths were Cambridgeshire Volunteer Bikers, who act as marshals at many events.

Among the many communities holding events, parades or services were Bassingbourn, Burwell, Chatteris, Gamlingay, Girton, Great Gidding, Great Shelford, Haddenham, Hemingford Grey, Holme, Kimbolton, Linton, Littleport, March, Ramsey, Sawston St Ives, Tilbrook and Wimblington.

At the Imperial War Museum Duxford, there was a flypast during which thousands of commemorative poppies were dropped, and a flying display featuring a Supermarine Spitfire.

In Waterbeach, 5,000 poppies crocheted by volunteers adorn panels at The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, site of the village memorial. Next year, the panels will travel to its sister church of All Saints, Landbeach.

Many communities also held services and observed two minutes silence for Armistice Day last Thursday.

In Cambridge, the silence was observed outside the Guildhall by city leaders, who were joined by members of the public.
