Repair work to start on Elizabeth Bridge in Cambridge
Work to repair Elizabeth Bridge in Cambridge will begin next month and last for four weekends.
The scheme will replace damaged bridge expansion joints, which absorb movements of the bridge caused by changes in temperature.
This will be done one side at a time, starting on the southbound side into the city centre. One lane will remain open to traffic in each direction.
It is proposed to carry out the work over four weekends – March 8 to 11, March 15 to 18 , March 22 to 25 and March 29 to April 1.
The works will start at 8pm on the Friday until 5am on the Monday, to try and minimise disruption.
Cambridgeshire County Council’s chair of the highways and community infrastructure committee, Councillor Mathew Shuter, said: “We need to carry out this work because the current bridge joints are damaged and need replacing with new ones.
“By removing the old joints on a bridge structure involves noisy concrete demolition, however, this work will be restricted to the daytime rather than overnight.
“We’ve worked hard with our contractors to minimise disruption which is why we’re working during weekends and taking into consideration the noisy daytime work required.
“I’d like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience during this scheme.”
The footpath/cycleway will also have new joints installed at the same time. These will be closed off on the side that will be worked on and pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted using the subways at each end of the bridge.
Local businesses and residents will be contacted prior to the work starting.
