Volunteers made the most of a sunny Saturday to clean the River Cam and public open spaces along the banks on March 25.

Luther Phillips, who used to hold an annual river clean, organised the event. People gave up their time to pick litter in several locations.

Luther said: “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers, who gave their time to litter-pick Cambridge’s beautiful commons and greens adjoining the Cam.

“It shows that people care and are compassionate about our green spaces.

“Keeping our environs clear of rubbish is important so we can enjoy these spaces, as well as preserving the environment, its history and safeguarding its heritage for future generations to appreciate.

“Thank you, Cambridge City Council, for supporting the event.”

Luther lived on a boat on the Cam for many years before moving to dry land and during that time established residents’ group Camboaters.
